Lismore Base Hospital Stage 3B2
John Holland Construction awarded VAE the contract for the Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) Stage 3B2, New North Tower Redevelopment.
#The Project
The New North Tower Redevelopment project is a new 10-storey tower that connects to the recently completed South Tower project (Stage3A).
Stage 3B1 included the shell and core of the South Tower (Levels 6 to 11) and the construction of the helipad. Stage 3B2 represents the remaining construction work including the internal fit-out of the South Tower, demolition of the existing Block A, and construction of North Tower. North and South Tower will link together on each level. Internal refurbishments to the existing buildings will include a new Main Entrance, a new Coronary Care Ward, new Medical Ward, and new Outpatients/Community Health area.
Stage 3B will include:
• Office Space
• Meeting Rooms
• Operating Theatres
• Special Care Nursery
• Recovery Rooms
• Medical Imaging
• Isolation Rooms
• Intensive Care Units
These works were undertaken in a live hospital environment with no disruption to daily hospital operations.
VAE employed local Northern NSW based site labour for mechanical duct installation and site management.
The John Holland Safety Award was received by VAE Group team members Nathan Merens, Dominic Middleton, Paige Antrobus and Geoff Sims during construction on the LBH project, for exceptional Safety practice on site.

John Holland Construction awarded VAE the mechanical services contract for the Lismore Base Hospital Stage 3B2, New North Tower Redevelopment.
The Lismore Base Hospital redevelopment Stage 3B continues the work of Stage 3A.
Stage 3A of the Lismore Base Hospital redevelopment commenced in June 2014 and was completed in July 2016. It involved construction of a new South Tower at the front of the site, including part construction of the helipad, and a new exterior front entry to the existing Hospital Main Entrance, a new patient drop-off area, and some internal existing building refurbishments.
Stage 3A included: A new and larger 51 treatment Emergency Department comprising
- A new ED Short Stay Unit
- A Fast Track unit
- A 19-bed Acute area
- A four-bed resuscitation area
- An ED Pediatrics area
- An ED Streaming area to triage and manage patient flow
A new and larger Renal Department comprising:
- 18 Hemodialysis treatment spaces, including three isolation rooms
- Three peritoneal dialysis home training rooms
- A private courtyard
- Spacious front entrance and forecourt area
The new facilities mean the hospital can expand its capacity to treat patients and meet the growing community demand for services into the future.
Stage 3A had a capital budget of $80.25 million – with $60.25 million from the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund and $20 million from the NSW Govt.
